Turn ping pong balls and felt into magical fairy lights straight out of a woodland dream.

There’s something about soft fairy lights that makes any space feel a little more enchanted. And when you add in 🍄mushrooms and a dash of ✨cottagecore charm? Pure magic.

If you’re craving cozy vibes without the hefty price tag, you’re going to love this DIY. With just a few dollar store basics, we’re transforming plain old string lights into the cutest little mushroom cluster you’ve ever seen.

Whether you drape them across a shelf, hang them in your reading nook, or wrap them around a mirror, these handmade mushroom lights will have everyone asking, “Where’d you buy those?”

(And you can just smile and say, “Oh these? I made them.” 😉)

💕 What You’ll Need:

  • 💡 A strand of white LED string lights (battery-operated or plug-in)

  • 🏓 Ping pong balls (multi-pack from the dollar store)

  • 🎨 Red and white felt sheets

  • ✂️ Scissors and a hot glue gun

  • 🛠 Craft knife or sharp-pointed tool

  • 🧵 Optional: twine, lace, or faux greenery for that extra woodland touch

🪄 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1️⃣ Prep Your Mushrooms

Take your ping pong balls and gently poke a small X at the bottom of each using a craft knife or sharp point. This lets them slide over the bulbs later like a little fairy cap. 🧚‍♀️

2️⃣ Make the Mushroom Caps – Felt Dome Method 🍄

Cut a circle of red felt about 3.5 inches wide — enough to drape nicely over the ping pong ball.

💡Pro Tip: Make tiny snips around the edges of the felt circle (like mini pizza slices), about ½ inch in, spaced evenly. This helps it curve smoothly into a dome!

If your felt feels stiff, lightly mist it with water or hover it over steam for a few seconds. Then, shape the circle over the ball using your fingers or a small object (like a bottle cap).

Hold in place a few seconds until it “remembers” the curve. Now you’ve got a mushroom cap! 🍄

3️⃣ Add White Dots

Glue on small white felt circles or dab white paint for that classic toadstool look.

4️⃣ Attach the Cap

Once the dome is formed, glue the curved felt onto the top of each ping pong ball. Hold in place a few seconds to set.

5️⃣ Slide Onto the Lights

Gently press each finished mushroom onto a lightbulb. The X cut should hold it in place without glue.

6️⃣ Add the Woodland Magic

Wrap the wire in lace, twine, faux ivy, or even mini florals. This is where you make it yours, a little ✨Dollar to Diva glam never hurt anybody.
